Today’s passage comes by way of In N’ Out, who, if you didn’t know, put Bible Verses on the bottom of their cups and fries. I had it for dinner last night (delish!), and my verses were Proverbs 26:16 and Isaiah 9:6. I’ll talk about the latter.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6
I love songs that take whole passages from the Bible and set them to music. I love PBS’s (of all places) brief background on George Frideric Handel’s Messiah.
It must have been an easy song to write because the music composition is recycled from a previous song of his, and the lyrics are lifted wholesale from the Bible:
Lyrics
For unto us a child is born (For unto us a child is born)
For unto us a child is born (For unto us a child is born)
For unto us a child is born (For unto us a child is born)
For unto us a child is born (For unto us a child is born)
Unto us (unto us) a Son is given (a Son is given)
Unto us (unto us) a Son is given (a Son is given)
And the government shall be on His shoulders
(And the government shall be on His shoulders)
And the government shall be on His shoulders
(And the government shall be on His shoulders)
And His name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor
The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father
The Prince of Peace, The Everlasting Father
For unto us a child is born (For unto us a child is born)
For unto us a child is born (For unto us a child is born)
Unto us (unto us) a Son is given (a Son is given)
Unto us (unto us) a Son is given (a Son is given)
And the government shall be on his shoulders
(And the government shall be on his shoulders)
And the government shall be on his shoulders
(And the government shall be on his shoulders)
Here’s one of my favorite renditions of it, enjoy on full blast!
